Nutritional Therapy
"Nutritional Therapy students are known for trying to fix everything at
once and make it perfect. This tutorial showed me how to prioritise and be more
laid back with clients. The other students also gave me loads of tips and information"
Sam Silvester- after her first Clinical Practice weekend tutorial.
These tutorials are a vital part of your training and development as a Nutritional
Therapist. The Tutorials are planned to be dynamic and supportive with opportunities
to work practically in small groups.
Each tutorial concentrates on a specific area of nutritional therapy, so please
look at the details of each to see which particular topic appeals to you.
Designed for students on the Kevala Centre's Distance Learning Course in Nutritional
Therapy, most workshops may also be taken by those requiring CPD hours.
Workshops are held at either the Centre, Okehampton or Haelan Centre and run
on both the Saturday and the Sunday from 10am to 4pm unless otherwise stated.
Practical Tutorials 2009
Nutritional Therapy Advisor Level
All of these are held at the Haelan Centre in London.
7th/8th February 2009 - Nutrition & Health – The 4 Fundamental
Factors
This vital tutorial will examine the 4 key factors that need to be addressed
in the successful treatment a client. The weekend will begin with an introduction
to healing through nutrition. We will then look in greater detail at supporting
digestive function. We will also examine the importance of
the liver and its role in detoxification.
As the elimination of toxic matter is vital to human health we will also be
looking at the factors that can contribute to toxicity. Within this area we
will focus on oxidation where we will look closely at antioxidant
support. Finally, due to its increasing prevalence in the Western lifestyle
we will also be examining the role of stress and its huge impact
on a person’s overall health status.
In addition to nutrition we will also be covering some adjunctive methods that
can help in supporting these 4 areas.
On a practical level, you will learn how to take a successful case
history. You will have the opportunity to see how a ‘real’
client was treated by applying the methods discussed during the course
of the weekend. You will also have an opportunity to develop your own case-taking
skills by practicing with your fellow students.
By providing a good balance between the practical and theoretical, this weekend
will instill you with the confidence to work with clients, as well as having
gained a deeper knowledge of the 4 Fundamental Factors that
are vital in human health.
18th/19th April 2009 - Blood Sugar Disorders & the Modern Diet
Blood sugar related conditions such as diabetes, hypoglycaemia
and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) have reached almost
epidemic proportions in the western world. Once rare in children, diabetes has
now become alarmingly commonplace. Researchers and scientists have linked these
conditions directly to diet. Given the huge changes that have taken place in
the human diet within the past 60 years alone, this is not surprising.
Where health is concerned the effect of poor blood sugar regulation simply
cannot be underestimated. As it is a condition that affects
practically every person in poor health today, it is vital that the modern Nutritional
Therapist knows how to manage it effectively.
This tutorial will examine the changes in our modern eating habits and the
impact this has had on blood sugar regulation. We will look at the major
organs involved in blood sugar control. We will also examine the importance
of blood sugar metabolism and its role in the effective day-to-day
function of the human body. The tutorial will also look at the changes in modern
foods that have led to poor blood sugar management. On a practical level
we will cover dietary methods for stabilising blood sugar levels that
will enable the body to return to a state of good health.
During the weekend you will gain experience on both a theoretical and
practical level. You will have the opportunity to see how a
‘real’ client was treated using the dietary methods
discussed. You will also have an opportunity to develop your own case-taking
skills by practicing with your fellow students. With a good balance of practical
and seminar-based learning, you will come away from this weekend feeling confident
about case history taking whilst being able to apply your knowledge
from the subjects covered.
19th/20th September 2009 - Digestive Health and Immunity
Many people are unaware of the significant role of good digestive function
in a person’s overall health status. This lack of understanding has created
a huge problem in modern health. The introduction of many detrimental foods,
drinks, medication and other substances correlates directly with diminishing
health. With approximately 70% of a person’s immune system located in
their gut, it is not surprising that abuse of the digestive system will result
in overall poor health. When treating a client, it is therefore of vital importance
that the modern Nutritional Therapist has a complete understanding
of both of these systems.
This tutorial will involve an intricate examination of digestive function.
You will be taken on a journey through the gastrointestinal tract where you
will learn about the function of each of the parts that make up this fascinating
system. You will learn about the various conditions that can affect an individual’s
digestive function and how these conditions will have an impact on overall immunity.
You will also learn about the various treatments and methods that you can apply
to help reinstate good digestive health.
In addition to this, you will also gain experience in case history taking.
You will have the opportunity to see how a ‘real’ client
was treated using the methods discussed during the course of the weekend. You
will also have an opportunity to develop your own case-taking skills by practicing
with your fellow students. With a good balance of practical
and seminar-based learning, you will come away with a deeper
understanding of the subject covered and a greater confidence
in your case-taking skills, whilst also being able to apply
what you have learned on the weekend.
14th/15th November 2009 - Nutritional Therapy – A Deeper Understanding
of the Fundamentals
In an age of convenience foods and fast-paced living the impact of diet has
never before been of such relevance. The fundamental aspects of nutrition form
the cornerstone to successful healing in all complementary
therapies. It is therefore imperative that the modern Nutritional Therapist
have a good grounding in all the areas involved in diet, supplementation
and their effects on bodily function.
This tutorial will look at the overall importance of diet to human health.
We will take close examination of the macronutrients: carbohydrates,
proteins and fats, as well as vitamins
and minerals. We will also cover the general function of the
digestive system as well as the major organs involved
in the digestive process. The controversial subject of supplementation
will also be covered at length in order to gain a greater insight into this
fascinating but often confusing subject.
On this weekend you will learn about the major food groups,
the importance of nutrients and how you can obtain a balanced diet through healthy
eating choices. You will also learn how to implement simple supplementary
measures to enhance health and support many conditions. Case-Study
exercises and Diet/Menu-Planning will form the practical
side to the weekend. Combining practical activities with theory, this weekend
provides a thought-provoking opportunity to explore the importance of nutritional
therapy and to deepen your knowledge of all these vital areas.
